Election Recipe Night!

Waiting for election returns can make for a pretty long night. If you’re in it for the long haul, you may as well enjoy yourself! Whip up a nice beverage and sip one of these. It may just make the results a little easier to swallow. Whether you’re celebrating victory or drowning defeat, we’ve created a few fun cocktails this Election Day.

Hailing from Hawaii, home of macadamia and pineapple, Barack Obama’s birthplace inspired this drink. It will put you in a celebratory mood, no matter which row of the ballot you’re on.

Obama Mama
1 oz. dark rum
1 oz. coconut rum
1 oz. macadamia nut liqueur
½ oz espresso vodka
½ oz. lemon juice
Shake with ice and serve in a tall glass.

Now, we know Mitt Romney abstains from alcohol, but there’s no reason you can’t raise a glass and indulge in a Mitt Rumney cocktail. If you’re a teetotaler too, just leave out the booze and enjoy your cranberry juice cocktail. At least it comes from New England.

Mitt Rumney
1 oz. spiced rum
1 oz. light rum
1 oz. Whipped vodka
2 oz. cranberry juice
Splash of lemon
Stir and serve over ice in a rocks glass.

Red and blue are slowly filling the map as commentators wait for results, especially from the swing states. Pour yourself another one and get comfortable. It's just too close to call.

Swing State
1 oz. apple pie liqueur
1 oz. Jack Daniels Tennessee Honey
Gently shake or stir with ice and strain into a tall shooter. Sip or slam.

We’re not sure what to call this one. We had a name, and then changed it. We were influenced by our constituents to change the name yet again, so we call it…

The Waffle
1 oz. vanilla vodka
1 oz. espresso vodka
1 oz. Sapling maple liqueur
3 oz. orange juice
Shake and pour over ice in any clean glass you have handy.

We don’t recommend having all of them tonight, unless you’re staying put. No matter what the outcome, we hope we've made Decision 2012 just a little easier to swallow.

Cheers & Bottoms Up!

Timeless Tavern Northville

Northville is one of the few places that is not on our way to anywhere else in the Adirondack Park. With overnights planned in both Lake Placid and Old Forge in the next two weeks, most places are on the way to or beyond either one of them.

The drive through Hadley and the town of Day along the Great Sacandaga Lake was alone worth the hour and fifteen minutes. Pam was on a trip to Virginia, so I flew solo on this one. However, I did allow my husband to chauffeur.

The Timeless Tavern sits on Main Street in Northville amid a row of storefronts in what appears to be a timeless town as well, reminiscent of a Look Magazine Hometown USA spread. Both village and tavern were pretty deserted, understandable at mid-afternoon, but the tavern was open, or almost open. Their hours are 4 to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday; 4 to 8 p.m. on Sunday; closed Monday. The bartender seemed to be getting the bar set up so it may not have been quite 4:00 when we went in.

The bar area is spacious with lots of natural pine; neat, well lighted, and with simple decor. Several tables, simply and elegantly covered with matching linens, are positioned in the tavern, a few next to windows; the others far enough away from the bar to be able to enjoy dining but close enough to be in on the action. The bar menu features sandwiches, burgers, specialty salads and light entrees in the $10.00 to $12.00 range, while the restaurant entrees are all priced between $17.00 and $25.00. Flagrant Red Sox and New England Patriots fans, owner Tom's New England accent betrayed his allegiance as we asked where the Yankees memorabilia was. We'll overlook it.

I made an immediate trip to the ladies' room. Contemporary and spotless but otherwise unremarkable. When I returned, my husband commented on the men's room, uncharted territory for me. Displayed over the urinal is a glass case containing several jokes for a gentleman's amusement, at the expense of we women, I'm sure. Doesn't the task at hand (so to speak) require some sort of attention? How does one steady the stream while pee(r)ing around the room? Just saying.

An inspection of the beer cooler divulged at least thirty bottled brews, including six or seven Sam Adams choices alone, the usual domestics, and even Molson Golden, which we didn't even think was still produced. Yuengling, Blue Moon, Sam Adams seasonal and a couple of others rounded out the beer list. The bar is well stocked with several flavored vodkas, Jack Daniel's Tennessee Honey, Jeremiah Weed, Maker's Mark and American Honey to name just a few.

The Great Sacandaga Lake region of the Adirondack Park is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts and seasonal visitors, though not as commercial as other areas like Lake George and Lake Placid. The Timeless Tavern is open year round and is accessible by snowmobile in the winter. The beer is cold, the staff is friendly and the menu is varied, though a little pricey.

Cheers!

Happy Father's Day from HHHP!

Happy Father's Day to all the Dads. We're going to treat our dad to some Jack Daniel's Honey. For the man who has everything! Tune in later for our special Father's Day Recipe!

Thanks, Katrink, for coming by to get a special Father's Day present for your husband - the Happy Hour in the High Peaks hat is definitely him.

Our dad was less than impressed with the Jack Daniels Tennessee Honey. Purist. However, the Father Knows Best shooter was a hit!

Father Knows Best
1 part Jack Daniel's Tennessee Whiskey (Honey or regular)
2 parts Tennessee hard cider
Juice from lemon wedge
Shake with ice and strain into shot glass. Garnish with lemon wedge.

Recipe Day on Deck

Jack Daniels Honey Whiskey.

A couple of weeks ago, JD inundated us with advertising and we have been scouring the liquor stores ever since. I ran into my friend Cathy at the AT&T store. She had just been to Boston over the weekend and spotted JD Honey in a liquor store and thought of me (imagine that). Usually she thinks of me when she's in the grocery store and sees Snyder's jalapeno prezel bits. But that day, she whipped out JD Honey from her purse, right there in the AT&T store! I think my reputation is morphing. Anyway, I brought the tiny bottle home and Kim's eyes really lit up. We wasted no time cracking that puppy open and sipped right from the bottle, passing it around. Must be plenty of others were anxious to get their hands on some. Mohan's finally added it to their inventory and I wasted no time making a purchase, just in time for recipe night!

After reviewing various bar guides, it seemed that anything could be mixed with Jack Daniels.  We scoured the recipes then decided on the following blend (after a few tastes and adjustments):

Trail Mix

1 oz Jack Daniels Honey
1 oz chocolate vodka
1 oz Frangelico
Top with cranberry juice
Shake and pour into a tall glass over ice

What's up this weekend? More Recipes

Friday we are going to invent some new drink concoctions and maybe try some variations of the tried and true.  Break out your blender, or pick up a Magic Bullet, and play along with us.  It will be a live blogcast (I promise), so feel free to offer your own suggestions, too.  Don't be afraid to try your own substitutions if your bar is under-stocked.  If you live in the Adirondacks, your bar should be running a bit dry by mid-February - we have to keep warm somehow.
Road trip for me next week, so no High Peaks Happy Hour reviews.  I'm off to Tennessee to determine if Makin' Moonshine in the Smoky Mountains is going to be our next book.  (Actually, going to visit my Mom, but maybe I can write off the mileage if I make it a "business" trip.  Not very worried that the IRS is watching me yet).
I know you're curious about how many people are following our blog.  Ok, I know you're not, but I'm going to tell you anyway! I'm excited to say that we have had 272 views so far.  Too bad so many of you are too shy to comment, but maybe by the time we hit 1000, you'll let your guard down. Til tomorrow....

P.S. HOLY $%!#.  AFTER I FINISHED MY POSTING, AN AD FOR MAGIC B....T APPEARED ON MY SCREEN.  I'M THINKING SPONSOR!!  ALSO, I'M THINKING, BIG BROTHER!
